INSPECT BEFORE RENTING THIS VACATION HOME!!! This was my first experience renting through VRBO. I ed this property for a family reunion based on the description on the website. I was unfamiliar with the Bethany Beach area but the property was available and seemed perfect for the occasion. At the time I was searching, it would have taken 6-8 hours of winter driving to inspect the property. Consequently, I took a chance and elected to forgo a visit before making a final, nonrefundable commitment. This was a mistake I will never repeat. When my family and I arrived for our reunion at the end of July, we could not have been more disappointed with the condition of the property. Overall, the interior was dark and run down. There were cobwebs, spider webs with bugs, layers of dust, and dust bunnies. The pervasive dirt and poor maintenance made this house feel like a spring-break flop house. The electrical outlets in the bathroom did not work. Linens were heaped in some closets so that the sliding closet doors couldn´t open. One shower drain was clogged with a large wad of hair. The showers had mold on the curtains. There was a fist-sized hole in the wall above the dining room table. The stove depicted in the photo description of the bottom kitchen was replaced by a countertop hotplate. The bathrooms had things like peeling wallpaper, broken toilet seats, rusted shower fixtures, and mold in the showers. The windows and sliding glass doors filthy. Underneath the beds we found old socks and a McDonald´s French fry box with fries still in it. There was a dangerous, foot-sized hole outside the threshold of the side door that was partially filled with a coffee can and covered by a doormat! There was siding detached and bowed from the upper wall above the rear deck. There were waist-high weeds choking the side walkway. The front, second-floor deck had a child-sized gap in the railing. The rear deck that adjoins the water was promoted as a safe place for children and pets. However, the entrance gate was hanging on by a single hinge and the gate to the dock could not be closed. A number of deck planks appeared to be spongy/rotted and some attempt had been made to repair small sections with unfinished boards. The decking near the dock gate was so bad that one board snapped suddenly when stepped on. Unfortunately, we´d already paid in full and the entire family had expended considerable time and effort to travel there. Our only practical recourse was to make the best of it.
