AIDS Project of the East Bay, also known as APEB, is a community-based organization that focuses on the prevention of AIDS through counseling, primary medical care, research, advocacy and educational services. It offers one-on-one risk reduction sessions, support groups, and free and confidential HIV testing services. Founded in 1983 and located in Oakland, Calif., the organization helps clients to grow mentally, physically and spiritually. Its culturally and linguistically appropriate services include psychosocial case management, emergency housing and financial assistance. AIDS Project of the East Bay also operates a wellness center that addresses the issues of low self-esteem, lack of medical insurance, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and internal and external homophobia through therapeutic counseling, acute care, immunization and health education services.
