AltaMed Health Services, a private nonprofit organization, provides health and human services in the Greater Los Angeles area, and is one of the largest federal community health centers in California. AltaMed began in 1969 as the East Los Angeles Barrio Free Clinic, a volunteer-staff storefront providing basic medical services. It has three Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations-accreditations in ambulatory care, home health and behavioral health. It serves more than 48,000 families each year, providing community access to medical and dental clinics, complete senior services, including adult day health care centers and case management. AltaMed, headquartered in Los Angeles, also offers the Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly, youth programs, and HIV and AIDS and substance abuse prevention and treatment.
