Gary was born in Big Springs, Texas. Gary attended Wake Forest University where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1981. Then, he attended Mississippi College School of Law where he received his law degree in 1985. While at Mississippi College School of Law, he was a member of Phi Alpha Delta, and a member of the Mississippi College Law Review (1984-1985). He is a member of the Defense Research Institute and North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys.
