The National Reading Styles Institute is a research-based educational organization dedicated to improving literacy. Located on Long Island in Syosset, New York, NRSI offers a wide selection of Reading Styles products and employs the services of an extensive network of consultants and trainers who are located throughout the United States. Some consultants work exclusively with us, but many are working principals, staff developers, teachers, curriculum coordinators, directors, and superintendents. The Carbo Reading Styles Program, developed by NRSI founder Marie Carbo, has received National Validations as a research-based language arts program and an outstanding school reform model that produces consistently high achievement results. NRSI consultants have trained teachers and administrators in Reading Styles methods in every state in America through introductory and in-depth trainings, seminars, and inspirational annual national conferences. NRSI has trained more than 400, 000 educators, and the program is used in thousands of schools. We work closely with state education departments, regional service centers, universities, and many national organizations devoted to improving literacy. The work of the Carbo Reading Styles Program was selected in 1998 and 2002 by the Northwest Regional Labs ( funded by the U.S. Department of Education ) as one of three research-based reading/language arts models of professional development in the United States. In 1997, the Kentucky Department of Education cited the Carbo Reading Styles Program as one of seven national reading programs that could document the ability to produce consistently high student performance results in reading. Articles describing the techniques and results of Marie Carbos work have appeared in such diverse journals as Phi Delta Kappan, Educational Leadership, The Reading Teacher, Teaching Exceptional Children, Theory Into Practice, Journal of Developmental Education, Exceptional Children, Academic Therapy, Learning, Teaching K-8, Early Years, Instructional Leader, American School Board Journal, National Elementary Principal, The School Administrator, Research in the Classroom, Research in the Schools ( Mid-South Educational Research Association ), and WSRA Journal ( Wisconsin State Reading Association ).
