The Port of Tacoma, located on the Commencement Bay in the southern Puget Sound region, is one of the leading seaports in North America. The port is an independent municipal corporation that operates under state-enabling legislation. It is a center for bulk, break-bulk, project and heavy-lift cargos, as well as automobiles and medium-duty trucks. The Port of Tacoma features an area of more than 24,000 acres that is used for shipping, warehousing, distribution and manufacturing activities. The port handles nearly $35 billion in annual trade and over 2 million twenty-foot equivalent container units. It includes more than 500 acres of land for industrial development.
