The Mendham First Aid Rescue Squad was established in 1940 by 12 men who saw a need and volunteered their time. The squad is now comprised of volunteers who provide first aid services to Mendham Borough residents. The first aid squad is available 24/7 and responds to more than 500 calls yearly. The Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad was founded in 1958 and is a non-profit organization that provides emergency medical services to Millburn. The squad is staffed completely by volunteers and funded through private donations. Their services are also free of charge. All members must complete a 110-hour EMT course, which includes training in CPR and automatic cardiac defibrillators.
Leonardo First Aid and Rescue Squad is one of the volunteer first aid squads providing emergency medical service for Middletown Township and the local community. The organization provides rescue and medical care for emergencies and uses various equipment and vehicles, including ambulances, water rescue trucks, water rescue boats, an extrication truck and support vehicles. The Lacey Township EMS is designated Squad #23 and serves Forked River, Bamber Lake, and six miles of the Garden State Parkway. The EMS station is also a primary responder for the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station for Emergency Medical Services. The staff consists entirely of volunteers, half of whom are certified as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's). The Lacey Township EMS generally answers about 2,000 emergency calls a year.
The Howell Township First Aid Squad has been in existence for more than 50 years, but has only been in its current headquarters for the past three years.
Not only is there a regular membership, the squad also includes a group of cadets who range in age from ages 14-17. Over the course of its existence the squad has seen a long list of Howell residents volunteer their time to help their neighbors in any number of critical positions and situations.
The West Essex First Aid Squad's 85 active volunteer members serve Caldwell, West Caldwell, North Caldwell, Essex Fells and Fairfield. The crew has four ambulances and one rescue truck to provide 24-hour emergency medical service and rescue with the Jaws of Life at no cost to the patient. In 2007 and 2008, the squad received more than 2,600 calls each year.
The squad works with Paramedic Mobile-ICU units based out of local hospitals, including Mountainside, St. Barnabas and others. The squad also works with local fire departments to provide medical care to firefighters as well as civilian patients at fire scenes.
Membership is open to anyone over the age of 16 who lives or works in any of the five municipalities. No experience is necessary and all required training is provided by the squad.
University Hospital EMS is an afflilate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. It is one of the largest and most comprehensive pre hospital healthcare systems in the country. Services include advanced life support, basic life support, rescue, 9-1-1/fire communications, special operations and air medical to name a few. The staff consists of highly-trained and certified medical personnel.
