Established in 1904, Oklahoma City Zoo is an approved member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the American Association of Museums as a living museum and botanical garden. The zoo participates in various cooperative species survival projects and offers various programs for the conservation of rare and endangered wildlife. It features a variety of animals and plants. The zoo also organizes various animal exhibits, gardens and special events that provide insight into the lives of a variety of creatures, such as cats, gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, fish, butterflies and various island species. Oklahoma City Zoological Park and Botanical Garden offers various recreational and educational opportunities. Its programs include nature classes, laboratories and zoo tours and for people of all ages. Additionally, the zoo has a gift shop, amphitheater, rides and amusement park. The city zoo is located in more than 100 planted acres of land in Oklahoma City.
