Under the leadership of founder Carl Totton, the Taoist Institute functions as a hub for North Hollywood's internal and external martial arts communities. Classes, lectures, demonstrations and seminars are offered in various disciplines. The class schedule ranges from tai chi to yoga to kung fu and more. Totton's Core System provides the basis for instruction. Informative DVDs and learning materials are also available, as are private lessons.
The Los Angeles chapter of Project GRAD is located directly across from the St. Patrick’s Catholic School on Erwin Street and Willowcrest Avenue. There are high proportions of young Americans leaving school unprepared and this national, non-profit program has stepped up to bridge that gap.
Since 1999, it has been providing guidance to young, low-income students facing obstacles that can cause them to drop out. Working closely with students, teachers and parents, the program's ultimate goal is to improve the approach of teaching basic skills in the classroom. Donations and volunteers are welcome.
