Shelley's Biscotti was founded in 1996 by Shelley Fryer, who has restaurant and food preparation experience dating back to the early 1970s. At her wholesale business, she and her staff make each biscotti by hand with only fresh and natural ingredients such as freshly grated orange zest, sea salt, olive oil and Madagascar bourbon vanilla. Shelley's Biscotti can be found at many Santa Cruz locations including Caffe Pergolesi, Food Bin, Lulu's at the Octagon and Caffe Bene, or you can shop online.
The Bagelry is a Santa Cruz tradition that has been serving up bagels, spreads, soups and salads since 1977. Conveniently located near downtown, the restaurant offers plenty of seating in its spacious main dining room, or outside dining in an adjacent courtyard. Bagels and soups are made fresh daily and a variety of spreads, both sweet and savory, are available. The Bagelry also sells day-old bagels at reduced prices.
This little bakery and market is the only Mexican bakery in Santa Cruz. Pastries are made on-site, with bakers arriving at 2am to have the goods ready by 7am. El Rosal also makes large, authentic tamales which are served steaming hot for $1.25 each. The roof is hung with the largest pinata selection in Santa Cruz, and the walls are stacked with toys and goodies to use as stuffing in the Watsonville-made pinatas. The store is owned by Jorge Hernandez, whose family also runs Hernandez Market on Ocean Street, and two bakeries in Watsonville.
This fresh bakery and coffee house offers delicious cookies, bread and crostatas with pleasant outdoor seating. Well-known locally for their muffins and dessert items, Emily's also has cookiegrams - an alternative to sending flowers or written note.
Quite often packed with morning devotees, the tranquil back deck overlooking the creek and friendly service make this a pleasant stop everytime. Wi-Fi available here is free.
For 30 years now, the Pacific Cookie Company has been an institution of Santa Cruz culture. In fact, the company's first employee (Cherlyn) is still managing the downtown store. It should come as no surprise that every cookie is hand-scooped and baked fresh daily, with quality ingredients. The Pacific Cookie Company even serves up scoops of local Marianne's ice cream. For that late night sweet tooth, this downtown spot stays open late. And last, but certainly not least, it is a terrific spot to pick up a delicious gift box for any special occasion. Gifts and other orders can also be purchased online.
