Neil Wechsler- OwnerI learned about the bicycle business in Urbana, Illinois. I was Paul Nicholsons first employee at his small bike shop in the 1970s. It was not a very conventional business. You could say Pauls Bike Shop was a throwback to a pre-corporate style of retail store, and at the same time he was definitely way ahead of his time. With just two of us working, and with both of us in graduate school, there were only so many customers that we could help each day. Therefore Paul established a rule: we were not to sell more than four bikes per week. Over twenty five years before bike fitting became the buzz word in bike stores nationwide, Paul wanted to make sure we had time to properly set up each Motobecane, Mercian and Austro-Daimler 10 speed that we sold. He insisted that the bike fit each customer to give them the most comfortable and efficient ride.In 1980 my wife, Mary, and I left Illinois and went on a bicycle camping trip from Scotland to Sicily, and then moved to Seattle to look for a spot to open our new bicycle store. Like Paul I started the store as small as could be, with no employees. Over the years Montlake Bicycle Shop has gradually grown to become a medium size store with an outstanding staff and a full spectrum of products and services. The equipment that we sell has changed enormously since the 70s, but the way my staff and I do business is not much different from how Paul and I operated. We do the very best job we can to see that each customers bike suits their needs functionally, works properly and fits comfortably. More than anything we try to help you enjoy bike riding as much as we always have.

On October 10, 1994, Recycled Cycles opened it doors to the public. We had envisioned Recycled Cycles to be an alternative to the "typical" bike shop by offering lower prices through the sale of pre-owned bicycles, parts, and accessories. We wanted Recycled Cycles to be a place where cyclists would want to shop, where bike shop professionals would want to work, and where both customers and employees could have fun sharing their knowledge of and enthusiasm for cycling. Although the shop has grown a lot over the past 12 years ( we now also sell new bikes ), these remain our goals to this day. The staff here at Recycled Cycles has grown as our business has grown. We are proud of each of them and the service they provide to our customers. Several of our crew celebrated their five and ten year anniversaries in 2009. As you scroll through our website staff members will greet you with each page. Notice we come in all shapes and sizes, some with tattoos and some with crazy hair but we all share a passion for cycling and are here to help you. That question is rather like asking, "how much does a car cost?" It all depends on the make, model, and condition. But I can make a few generalizations. For a used road or mountain bike, $150 and up ; for a used kids bike, $25 and up. Of course, some used bikes cost quite a bit more than even our typical new bike. A new, race-ready road bike can easily cost $3000 or more. So, if someone consigns such a bike in excellent condition with us for $1900, thats still a rather expensive bike, but its also an exceptional value if youre looking for such a bike. If we bought some used department-store-quality bikes for very little money, fixed them up in little time, and sold them for $99, we might be able to make a few bucks. But, most such bikes are made of low-quality materials, are not designed to be maintained, are heavy, and dont work very well despite the best efforts of skilled mechanics. So we generally dont buy such bikes or offer them for sale.
