The Christian Science Reading Room doubles as both a bookstore and a meeting place for services. The reading room within the bookstore invites browsing and reading of Christian Science materials. The bookstore closes for Wednesday night services. Visitors and interested learners are always welcome.
Warwick's is a local landmark now run by the fourth generation of the Warwick family. This bookstore offers more than the bestseller lists. An integral part of the community, Warwick's regularly offers book signings and readings, with many authors leaving a selection of autographed books for purchase. Warwick's "bookies" are ready to help give recommendations on customer's favorite genre or author. There is also a large selection of cookbooks, indie bestsellers and children's books, with a nice reading corner and comfy rug for youngsters to sit on.
Come the second Tuesday of the month at 10am to hear about new releases, books of note and store favorites, attendees can get a 20% discount off any books that were discussed. Warwick's also offers a Books for Schools program coupled with special children's author events.
The General Store Co-Op was founded in the 1980s on the University of California, San Diego campus. Students can find textbooks and other study materials. When it's time to take a break, the store offers free Nintendo, movie rentals and arcade games. Consignment items are for sale, along with concessions and apparel.
Avid readers can spend hours browsing through the shelves of D.G. Wills Books, located on Girard Ave. It stocks more than 100 categories of new and used books. This popular neighborhood bookstore plays host to numerous author signings, poetry readings and lectures. Some of the well known authors that have appeared here include Norman Mailer and Allen Ginsburg. Many of its events can be viewed on YouTube. D.G. Wills Books specializes in academic subjects and classic literature, such as philosophy, Greek, Latin, sciences, math, oceanography, art and music.
It also carries books about military history. An outdoor shelf helps to attract residents, walking by with their dogs, many of whom decide to enter the store to find out more about its offerings.
