Opened in November 2008, the Next Key Center at Hamilton is a housing and job-training campus that includes 32 studio apartments, a training kitchen for Fresh Starts Culinary Academy, the 150-person Key Room event space and administration offices for Homeward Bound of Marin.
The center was built as an extension of Homeward Bound's successful programs serving homeless adults and families, offering apartments at below-market rent along with culinary training and employment opportunities through the Fresh Starts Catering project and production of Halo Truffles as well as Key Room rental.
A $9.3 million fundraising campaign to complete the center included the nation's first nonprofit IPO, Homeward Bound's "Immediate Public Opportunity...to end homelessness" by purchasing "fundraising shares" in the project.
Next to Homeward Bound's New Beginnings Center, a transitional housing program for 80 adults, the Next Key Center incorporates solar panels producing electricity and hot water. In 2011, Fresh Starts Catering and the Key Room gained certification as Marin County Green Businesses.
