Housing for Independent People (HIP) is a collaborative provider of housing for people with special needs. HIP serves very low-income people with developmental disabilities, psychiatric disabilities, people with HIV/AIDS and the elderly. Approximately 264 people are provided with affordable housing in 173 units of housing at 19 locations in the Bay Area, primarily in Watsonville, San Jose and Oakland.

Through charitable donations and tenant rental income, HIP is able to provide affordable housing. Rent for residents starts at $382/month. More than 90 percent of rental revenue is used for the management and maintenance of the properties.

Sponsors and volunteers are also a major aspect of HIP. Sponsors are individuals or groups that have made a commitment to support a HIP project for a period of time. Both volunteers and sponsors help with construction, providing food, materials and donations.

For more information about volunteering or becoming a sponsor, feel free to call or visit the website.
