Husband and wife Peter Stiehler and Kate Chatfield started the Catholic Worker Hospitality House in San Bruno in 1996. When it started, Catholic Worker, which is part of a national network of hospitality houses that began during the Great Depression era, just offered a free dining room out of St. Bruno's Catholic Church. Now, the organization runs a homeless shelter at St. Bruno's and a long-term supportive housing facility on Second Avenue for people who used to stay at the shelter.
