Look for the Red Wood Christmas Tree Farm on the lefthand side of the road as you head from Redmond toward Woodinville. The big red barn with the sign reading "Christmas Trees" is a dead giveaway. Driving down the gravel driveway, you'll enter a shopping experience as old fashioned as the red barn that beckons you in.

The original creation of "Grandpa" Larry McMurtrey, the farm is now run by his youngest daughter, Jana, and her husband Pablo. The two continue the tradition of giving people a classic tree-buying experience by offering free hot cocoa, cider and candy canes as they look around. Even the family dog is invited, as long as you keep him on a leash. The farm specializes in four distinct varieties of trees, noble, grand, Douglas and Fraser Fir - each with its own distinct qualities. Mistletoe and wreaths are also available. The farm is open around Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve.

The farm began in the 1880s when Issac W. Woods homesteaded in Mason County. He was followed to the area by his daughter and husband, William A and Olivia Woods Hunter. They pioneered in the Skokomish River Valley raising cattle and crops. In 1894 their son Paul was born, and in 1898 son Harold, who both followed their parents footsteps by the 1920s. They increased the farm and began a dairy farm and delivered milk to the logging camps, Lake Cushman Dam construction crews in the 1920s and later door to door in Bremerton. In 1948 Pauls two sons, Bill and Jim started purchasing land suitable for growing Christmas trees. They continued to work on the farm, assuming the operation of the farm in 1962. The dairy farm operated until 1973. By 1977 Bill and Jim each had grown sons and decided to divided their holding and go into business with their sons. Hunter Farms today is Bill and Carol Hunter and children. Son Bill Jr. & wife Luayne and son Paul & wife Leslie. Also their daughter Pam and her husband help out on the farm when not busy with their own profession. Also recently joining the family operation is Bill Jr.s daughter Jami, becoming the first of the sixth generation of Hunters to farming in Mason county. Hunter Farms operates a diversified farm in the rich Skokomish River Valley raising such crops as Christmas trees, timber, greenhouses flowers and vegetables, cattle and hay. Hunter Farms is a direct farm market, which retails their greenhouse plants, sweet corn, vegetables, pumpkins, hay, Christmas trees and wreaths at the general store located on the farm. The Christmas season includes a retail Christmas tree operation in the Seattle market.
