The Department of Public Works is one of the departments operated by the city of Birmingham, Ala. The department offers a wide range of services, including storm water and sewer management, collection of residential and commercial refuse, brushing, recycling and seasonal collection of leaves. Located in Birmingham, it manages various landfill sites and issues permits for their commercial use. Additionally, the department conducts several environmental programs. It collects and recycles solid waste materials, such as plastic bottles, aluminum and steel cans, newspapers, cardboards, magazines, office paper, textbooks and paper bags. Apart from managing the Department of Public Works, the city of Birmingham also operates the departments of finance, fire, police, parks and recreation, library, community development, traffic engineering and municipal court.
