The Department of Human Resources handles the workplace and human resources issues for city employees. Residents can contact the department to receive benefits information and assistance, payroll issues, job information and union contract information.
The Community Development Office administers federal assistance, such as U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) funds, to Stamford's qualifying neighborhoods. The office makes loans and grants to community groups and housing owners, as well as organizations that provide day care, employment training and programs for special needs populations.
This office, located in a shopping center on High Ridge Road, is open five days a week for individuals to pick up forms regarding workers' compensation disputes. In addition to Stamford, this office also administers forms to those living in Greenwich, Norwalk, Wilton, Ridgefield, New Canaan, Darien and New Fairfield.
The Stamford Government Center, located downtown on Washington Boulevard, holds most of the government offices for the city, including the mayor's office, the Office of Administration, the Office of Legal Affairs, the Office of Operations, the Public Services Bureau, the Engineering Bureau, the Land Use Bureau, the offices for Elected Officials and the Office of Public Safety, Health and Welfare. Municipal meetings are also held here.
Stamford residents can visit the Government Center during the general office hours to conduct business as well as use the computers located in the main lobby.
State Representative Gerald Fox III is the Assistant Majority leader serving Stamford's 146th Assembly District. Mr. Fox is a Stamford native and graduated Westhill High School before attending Providence College and Marshall Law School in Chicago. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Stamford Public Education Foundation, CTE, Inc. and the Advisory Board for the Stamford Youth Foundation. Mr. Fox has helped make Stamford one of the safest cities in America by writing and supporting legislation to protect victims of violent crimes and strengthen penalties against offenders.
The Department of Children and Families serves 36,000 children and 16,000 families yearly in Connecticut. The Department is guided by four mandate areas: child welfare, children's behavioral health, juvenile services and prevention. To serve these mandate areas, the department operates a telephone hotline, maintains custody of 5,000 children and serves families after findings of neglect or abuse. Additionally, the department facilitates and oversees foster and adoption placements.
The Stamford Animal Care & Control Shelter provides a home for neglected and abused animals, as well as spay, neutering and adoption services. The facility can be found on Magee Avenue between Jefferson Street and Shippan Avenue in Stamford's Harbour Point area. The highly successful shelter has remained a no-kill facility under the guidance of director, Laurie Hollywood and has maintained the highest adoption rate of all similar shelters in the state of Connecticut.
Located in Stamford, the town's Government Center is a community resource building that is responsible for the welfare, maintenance, preservation and well-being of all citizens and town matters. This establishment is responsible for licenses, permits, forms, charters, codes and ordinances, among other items. Government Center is also home to the Mayor's office, Board of Finance, Board of Representatives, Public Safety, City Operations, Legal Affairs, Stamford Public Schools and Administration.
This regional office serves the towns of Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Wilton and Stamford. Residents can contact this office for various social services, including assistance with disabilities, domestic violence, child welfare and care for the elderly. The Department of Social Services can also provide assistance for needy families, people living with HIV and AIDS and those in need of employment and/or basic health care.
This office is one of the 17 field offices in the Boston region of the national Social Security Administration. Residents can access assistance in recieving and managing their Social and Supplemental Security benefits. Over 650,000 Connecticut residents recieve Social Security benefits, and this branch helps ensure that local residents can access and understand their benefits.
