This the the Suffolk County office of the New York State Division of Human Rights, which enforces the state Human Rights Law passed in 1945. The law prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, credit, places of public accommodations and nonsectarian educational institutions based on age, race, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, military status and other specified classes. This office investigates and prosecutes complaints from local employees who believe they have lost their job, been discriminated against in the workplace or otherwise treated unfairly. It also offers classes and ongoing programs to educate the public about ongoing human rights issues in the state.
The Suffolk County One-Stop Employment Center is a facility that aims to bring employers and job seekers together. Professional staff from both the private and public sectors provide human resource services to prospective employees. Those engaged in the job hunt can come here to use a computer workstation, photocopiers and fax machines, and access databases for networking. The organization also hosts career fairs and workshops throughout the year.
The Department of Economic Development and Workforce Housing is located in the H. Lee Dennison Building within the Suffolk County government complex off Veterans Highway. Run by Commissioner Yves Michel, this department helps businesses moving in and establishing themselves in Suffolk while helping its workers find housing to suit their needs. Suffolk County government is the main body of government that handles the Sachem area, aside the Town of Brookhaven and Islip.
Run by County Executive Steve Levy, a Sachem High School alum, the county is divided into 18 legislative districts, each represented by a legislator. As of 2010, there are nine democrats, six republicans, two members of the Independence Party of New York, and one legislator from the Working Families Party.
