The Planning Commission has seven residents and property owners who are appointed by the City Council for four-year terms. Commission members guide the city's policies through review and improvement to the City's comprehensive land use plan, zoning code, shoreline management, environmental protection and related land use documents. The Planning Commission meets every other Thursday and allows the public to comment at each meeting.

Shoreline's Planning and Community Development department handles everything from building permits to home and commercial building inspections to aerial mapping, tree cutting and right-of-way determinations. The department enforces the Shoreline development codes and municipal code and regulates things like wireless antennas. Joe Tovar is the department's director. The department is located on the first floor of City Hall.
