The mission of the U.S. Army Reserve is to provide trained, equipped and ready soldiers and cohesive units to meet the global requirements across the full spectrum of operations. It is one of the three components of the United States Army.
The Public Works Department manages construction and development projects for Iowa City. It comprises six divisions: administration, engineering, streets and traffic Engineering, solid waste, equipment, and wastewater (including landfill and water). These divisions operate in various locations.
The Department of Motor Vehicles offers licenses for personal and commercial drivers and motorcyclists. It also offers information on vehicle licensing and registration, disability permits and specialty license plates.
The Building Inspection Division is one of the three divisions within the Housing Inspection Services Department. It is responsible for enforcement of all codes and ordinances regulating the protection of public health, safety and general welfare as it relates to the building environment and maintenance of existing structures.
The Building Inspection Division enforces the zoning, sign, nuisance, weed, noise, graffiti, site plan review, flood plain management and construction site runoff ordinances. Enforcement of snow and ice removal from public sidewalks is also a responsibility of the Building Inspection Division.
Appointed by the City Council, the City Clerk reports directly to the council and attends all the council meetings. The City Clerk has custody of deeds, contracts and abstracts. The office of the Clerk is responsible for maintaining all ordinances, resolutions and minutes and the Iowa City Code. Additionally, the City Clerk maintains subdivision files, project files, the Domestic Partnership Registry and an index of Council proceedings.
The Public Defender's Office specializes in criminal defense work and juvenile matters, and provides high-quality, reasonably priced legal representation to indigent clients.
The Veteran Affairs Medical Center's mission is to honor America's veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being. The main medical center is in Iowa City, but the hospital offer six outpatient clinics. The Iowa City Veterans Affairs Medical Center is committed to providing quality health care, quality research and quality education to its patients, community partners and colleagues.
The city council is responsible to the citizens of Iowa City, and devotes its energies to making decisions which are in the best interest of the public welfare. The council establishes local laws, sets policy, approves programs and appropriates funds. The council consists of seven members; four represent the city at-large and three represent districts. Each council member serves a four-year term. The city attorney, city manager and city clerk are hired and held responsible to the city council. The head of city council is the mayor of Iowa City. The city council does not hold regular office hours, but meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7pm.
The Equipment Division repairs, maintains and manages services for all major city-owned vehicular equipment with the exception of transit buses. Acquisition of new vehicles/equipment and disposition of replaced vehicles/equipment as well as fueling services are the responsibility of the Equipment Division.
WIC is the supplemental food program for women, infants and children. The WIC office is housed in the Johnson County Health and Human Services building. The office offers assistance to mothers and infants up to age five who meet income guidelines and who are at nutritional risk. The WIC program has interpreters to assist people who do not speak fluent English.
The Johnson County WIC has a child health clinic that offers immunizations to children and physical examination services ranging from developmental screenings to counseling on nutrition. Additionally, the department offers a maternal health program for pregnant women, and dental care coordination for low-income families' children.
The city attorney acts as chief legal counsel for the city council, the city manager and various city departments and staff members. He or she is also responsible for supervising the city attorney office, which includes four assistant city attorneys.
Iowa City Municipal Airport is one of the 113 pubic airports in Iowa and is the second-busiest general aviation airport in the state. It is the oldest civil airport west of the Mississippi. The airport serves business, medical, charter and private pilots throughout the year.
The Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center, which serves Kalona, Riverside and Johnson counties, is 400 acres in size and receives approximately 125,000 tons of trash each year. Yard waste, tires, lead acid batteries, appliances and oil are banned from the landfill, but there are recycling programs for disposal of these items. Garbage disposal rates vary according to residency within Johnson County, weight of garbage and type of garbage. The landfill offers tours designed to inform residents on how to reduce waste.
The City Manager implements policy decisions made by the City Council and enforces city ordinances. The manager's duties range from appointment and supervision of directors of the city's operating departments to supervision of the conduct of city employees to preparation and presentation of a proposed annual city budget.
