Members of the Lindenhurst Volunteer Fire Department work to protect locals from fires and other hazards. The volunteer force was founded in 1885, and a time capsule was buried on site during the building's 100th anniversary. Lindenhurst residents can call the station for around-the-clock service.
The Lindenhurst Village Community Center is the local meeting area for residents. It offers departments for little league, softball, baseball, lacrosse, junior soccer, football, and cheerleading leagues. The community center also offers a senior center and space for group meetings.
The Suffolk County Legislator takes phone calls regarding any questions civilians may have, and it holds meetings and functions.
A graduate of Lindenhurst public schools, Bob Sweeney has been a lifelong resident of Babylon. He has served in various public service positions for over 15 years.
The Town of Babylon named him one of the "100 Most Influential People" of the 20th century. Gannett News Service called him "one of Albany's most prolific legislators" due to the high percentage of the bills he sponsors that get signed into law. His latest bill (Feb 2011) established funding to recruit and retain emergency service volunteers via a check-off box on state tax returns.
The Babylon Town Clerk's office has records dating back to 1827. These include the town laws, resolutions and ordinances. The office is responsible for record management and serves as the Registrar of Vital Statistics, Marriages and Licensing Officer. While you may still need to come in to pay and validate them, many of the application forms you need to fill out are now available online. The closest access to the clerk's office is from the rear of the building.
Down the block, across the street from the high school is the Armed Forces Career Station. It is a place where those seeking to use their skills in defense of their country can investigate a career in the Marines. Well over 90 percent serve in support positions as mundane as accounting, advertising and air conditioning.
Lindenhurst Village Horticultural Department is operated by the Lindenhurst Village government. The department is responsible for the landscaping and gardening of public property.
The district court is a civil court where lawsuits that exceed the small claims courts’ $5,000 maximum are heard. The maximum amount in district court is $15,000 per cause of action. Defendants must appear at the clerk’s office to answer complaints.
The Department of Public Works is responsible for the Village's infrastructure. The staff manages and maintains the streets, sidewalks, trees, parks, cemeteries, signs, traffic signals, sewers and storm drains of Lindenhurst. The Department of Public Works also handles sanitation, snow plowing and bulk pick-up of oversized household items. Residents can call ahead to arrange for special pick-up of furniture, appliances and other large items.
Representative Wayne Horsley has served in various positions around the county since 1999 and currently represents residents of the 14th District in Babylon, Lindenhurst, North Lindenhurst, West Babylon, and Barrier Beaches. He holds two masters degrees and a doctorate and lives in Babylon with his wife and children.
The North Lindenhurst Fire Department is dedicated to saving lives and protecting property. The fire department also performs ice rescue and coordinates with the county's Emergency Management Office's response to natural or man-made disasters. After a heavy snowfall, residents are requested to please shovel the snow around the fire hydrant.
