Woodlawn Fire Department is one of four fire departments serving South Whitehall. Founded in 1928 with 113 members, the first fire house was constructed in 1937 and moved to its current engine house in 1975. The department has a hazardous materials unit that handles spills. In 2009, the department responded to a total of 436 calls.
The Lower Macungie Township Fire Department began as the Wescosville Fire Company. Although its name has changed to better reflect coverage throughout the township, the station that was built on this site in 1974 -- and enhanced in the 1980s -- recently has become one of two stations in the township. A second facility -- known as the Brandywine Station -- was opened earlier this year under the same organization along Sauerkraut Lane near Willow Lane.
Lehigh County's bureau of parks and recreation develops and manages about 2,500 acres of county parks and open space. Among the parks it manages are several in South Whitehall, including Cedar Creek Parkway East, Cedar Creek Parkway West and the Lehigh County sports fields complex.
Salisbury Township Police Chief Allen Stiles leads an 18-member force that includes a detective, sergeant and a school resource and K-9 unit officer. The department's headquarters is located in the municipal annex and recently underwent an extensive renovation.
The Salisbury Township municipal building houses the office of the township manager, assistant manager/director of finance, director of planning, zoning and code enforcement and the tax collector. The police and public works departments are next door in the municipal annex. Salisbury Township was founded in 1753, but through a series of annexations lost much of its land to neighboring municipalities. It consists of 11.3 square miles, the second smallest township in Lehigh County. It is a largely suburban residential area that flanks the east and south sides of Allentown. The township's east and west sides are not contiguous.
