The Eagles Club is a meeting place for members of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, a national non-profit group that focuses on doing work to benefit the local community. The Eagles Club, located in the heart of downtown Stamford, in a dimly lit old two-story house that stands out amongst the many skyscrapers that surround it. The Eagles Club is a social hall with a bar, and you can easily find members here at all times of day and night socializing.
A Stamford institution since 1922, the E. Gaynor Brennan Golf Course originally opened as a private, 62-acre course, opening up to the Stamford public and expanding to 70 acres by 1949. The course's original name, Hubbard Heights Golf Club, was changed to its current one in 1979, after the former official who helped purchase the club for public use. The Web site has information on course rates and rules, and golfers can also book tee times online. The course is also home to the E. Gaynor Brennan Golf Shop and the restaurant Zody's 19th Hole, owned by Mike Zohdy.
On Roxbury Road (about a quarter mile past Westhill High School), Roxbury Swim & Tennis Club is a private, nonprofit club that sits on 23 acres of woodland in northern Stamford. With a main clubhouse, eight-lane pool, lighted platform tennis courts, pavilion, tennis pro shop and recreation room, the club also sponsors tennis, swimming, diving and water polo leagues for various ages, and has private and group lessons in tennis, swimming and diving.
The San Manghese Social Club was founded by local residents with cultural and family ties to San Mango, a region of southern Italy. In 1994 they founded the San Manghese Soccer Club, with Frank Coppola being the team's first coach and manager. The club has hosted community events such as the S. Teodoro Feast and the Italian-American Social Clubs Columbus Day Soccer Tournament.
For more than 75 years, this membership-based club has been a staple in the Stamford/Cove area community. Run by club president Joseph Tamboro, the Settefratese Social Club is a gathering place for Italian-American residents whose families hail from Italy's Settefrati municipality.
The Settefratese Social Club reflects the historical presence of Italians in Stamford's West Side neighborhood, and the Settefratese traditionally have a mass for their patron saint, La Madonna di Canneto--followed by the club's annual Sagne e Fagioli dinner.
