"Common grounds" refers both to the ambience here—laid-back and living-room-comfy—and gourmet ground coffee beans. Three years ago, the owners searched northern California for the "right town" in which to follow their dream and open a coffeehouse. When they arrrived in Davis, it was love at first sight. "If it wasn't for us and a couple of others, there wouldn't be places for people to just pass the time of day or spend hours studying," said the owner. Free Wi-Fi, deep, comfortable lounge furniture and friendly staff reflect his vision of a coffeehouse in which patrons can relax and share a common public space. Plans are in the works to expand evening acoustic music events.
That is not to say the "grounds" aspect is overlooked. The coffee here is "panache," with beans from around the world processed and roasted by the Portland, Oregon–based company. On a given day, "Black Magic" (intensely bright, spicy, and toasty) or the much mellower Tanzanian Peaberry may be featured. There's also a regular "house blend" available every day.
