Pacesetters began as a volunteer program during the summer of 1971 by caring citizens and family members. The goal of providing a humane and productive lifestyle for those with developmental disabilities began as an adult activities center. Operation began in October 1971 and has grown throughout the Upper Cumberland Region of Tennessee in the years since.Pacesetters has grown to become one of the largest community based day training and residential programs in the state of Tennessee. As of 2010, Pacesetters provides day and residential services in 5 Tennessee Counties and provides personal assistance in 12 Tennessee Counties

Chartered in 1952, The Arc of Davidson County is a family-based organization that supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It serves more than 700 children and adolescents in over 15 counties of Tennessee in cooperation with the Tennessee Department of Mental Retardation Services Medicaid Waiver Program. The organization offers family support, respite and independent support coordination programs. The Arc of Davidson County serves nearly 400 individuals with severe disabilities in Davidson County, Tenn. It also receives grants from the state of Tennessee to provide financial assistance services for emergency respite care. Its respite program includes various day and before- and after-school care services. The organization is located in Nashville, Tenn. The Arc of Davidson County is a chapter of The Arc of The United States, which is one of the largest membership disability organizations in the United States.
