The Department of Parks & Recreation is responsible for the upkeep of all Kirkwood's parks and public recreation facilities, such as the Community Center (where its offices are located) tennis courts, acquatic center, etc. The Department also offers residents and non-residents alike many programs and classes throughout the year including fitness, dancing, tennis classes and much more. Also under its purview is the annual Greentree Festival, an extremely popular event held every September in Kirkwood Park that offers live music and endless activities for all ages that highlight the community's volunteer residents and non-profit organizations.
Heman Park Community Center is available for rental by both residents and non-residents. According to the City's website, the facility includes two meeting halls that can be converted into one large room, has a fully functional kitchen, and is accessible for all individuals.

Sunset Hills Community Center is located on South Lindbergh Boulevard and offers residents a wide range of services and amenities. The location offers numerous fitness programs and equipment, including 20 pieces of cardio equipment, such as treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, striders, and two sections of free weights ranging from light weights and kettle bells to heavy weight dumbbells. The center offers personal training, group fitness and specialized programs and also has a gymnasium available for rental for basketball, volleyball, tennis and soccer. Built in 1966, the Kirkwood Community Center is a centerpiece for local residents' indoor recreational activities. The center features a skating rink, two gymnasiums, a 400-seat theater and several meeting rooms. A renovation in 1992 expanded the facility with a new gym and more meeting rooms and offices, and gave it a modern touch. The center regularly provides rental space for meetings, parties, dances and bridal and baby showers. In the midst of Kirkwood Park and the Aquatic Center, the Kirkwood Community Center acts as an anchor for many families in the area.
