The Early Childhood Parenting Center hosts weekly parenting groups for parents of infants and toddlers. These groups promote healthy child development through building strong social-emotional connections. Parents in these groups share experiences and learn about child development from child development experts. A high staff-to-participant ratio allows for individualized attention during these group meetings. These groups are set in an informal, nurturing environment for play and discussion.
Located within the Mark Taper Foundation Building, OPCC - formerly called the Ocean Park Community Center - is a nonprofit network of shelters and services geared toward individuals who are homeless or have low-income status. The organization is critical to many social-outreach efforts in the City of Santa Monica.
The OPCC network includes:
- The Access Center, which provides basic services to an average of 275 homeless individuals each day
- The Campion Mental Health Center and Daybreak, the only program on the Westside of Los Angeles that is specifically tailored to helping homeless women who suffer from long-term debilitating mental illness
- The k9 Connection, which bonds high-risk youth with shelter dogs as part of its mentoring and counseling efforts
- Night Light Youth Outreach Services, which help homeless youth and runaways
- Safe Haven, which aims to permanently transition chronically homeless individuals off the streets
- Samoshel, which provides an array of services to homeless individuals
- SHWASHLOCK, which stands for "SHowers, WASHers and LOCKers" and also provides basic services
- Sojourn, which services battered women and children
- Turning Point, a transitional-housing center that accommodates up to 55 individuals
All residential programs operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. People who seek services at OPCC range from children and families to battered women to those suffering from a mental illnesses. With the economic downturn, people who face home foreclosures, job loss and exorbitant medical bills are also seeking services through the network. OPCC provides short-term services such as clothing and showers as well as long-term services such as case-management and outreach.
1450 Ocean - Camera Obscura, formerly known as the Senior Recreation Center, is the primary recreational services center for Santa Monica's elderly population. The center provides classes, exercise sessions, community outreach opportunities, and other activities and events for individuals who are at least 50 years old. Located close to the Pacific Ocean, the Center has a viewing deck in the back that offers views of the water and Santa Monica Beach.
The center has a strong support system for elderly people who are disabled. It regularly partners with the Big Blue Bus for getaway trips; and with Wise & Healthy Aging, a Santa Monica nonprofit that provides progressive health and human services.
Senior Recreation Center classes, programs and other activities include ballroom dancing, bridge, chair-assisted yoga, cultural arts workshops, dances, foreign-language classes, group exercise, healthy cooking, healthy education, improv classes and meditation. Movie viewings are offered as well, and shuffleboard courts are located outside.
With their Membership, Students come in to our Center for an hour and fifteen minutes, 2-5 days per week, any time after school before 7pm, and weekends between 10am-2pm. Choose times that work best for your schedule. View our Programs Page or click View our Classes to see how our programs work.
To the immediate north of the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, the Santa Monica Civic Center is the site of a major redevelopment effort by the city. An 11.3-acre portion of the property was purchased by the Rand Corportation, across 4th Street to the west.
The Civic Center Specific Plan, which was adopted on June 28, 2005, encompasses the area bordered by Pico Boulevard, 4th Street, Ocean Ave. and Colorado Avenue. The area will become, after the decades-long redevelopment, a locus for community gatherings and major civic events.
The recently restored Annenberg Community Beach House has it all: historical value (it was once owned by actress Marion Davies); a pool that's accessible to the public; private party spaces; regularly rotating art exhibits; and large, bright areas used for community discussions.
Practitioners and fans of yoga, volleyball, soccer and aquatics all congregate here on a frequent basis, and with the beach only a couple of steps away, it's no wonder.
