The Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center, which serves Kalona, Riverside and Johnson counties, is 400 acres in size and receives approximately 125,000 tons of trash each year. Yard waste, tires, lead acid batteries, appliances and oil are banned from the landfill, but there are recycling programs for disposal of these items. Garbage disposal rates vary according to residency within Johnson County, weight of garbage and type of garbage. The landfill offers tours designed to inform residents on how to reduce waste.

The center also offers rentals for all types of occasions, including wedding receptions, business events and concerts. The center offers space for up to 175 people and also offers gallery space for rental.
Holy Trinity Lutheran Church is a affiliated with the Southeastern Iowa Synod and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Holy Trinity fosters the spiritual life of the area's sizeable Lutheran community. Holy Trinity also has a number of ministries directed toward the spiritual education of children, families, teens and teachers.
First United Methodist Church is a church that connects people with God and each other. It offers many programs including Faith and Reason, Following in the Footsteps of Jesus, Faith and Film, Growin' Grownups and more. The church also runs the Food at First food pantry program.
Rape Victim Advocacy Program provides counseling, support and education services to rape victims and survivors. It also provides medical and legal advocacy. The center welcomes volunteers who would like to provide advocacy services or assist with community outreach and research studies.
The Can Shed is a recycling center that offers redemption of all brands of containers entitled to an Iowa refund. The business accepts walk-in customers and also offers can drives. It is led by Jim Hagen and Troy Willard.
St. Thomas Aquinas Church & Catholic Student Center is a community of college students and resident parishioners. The church offers regular Mass services as well as numerous ministries, including for students, finances, youths, social justice and more. Visitors are welcome.
