The San Mateo County Assessor and Clerk's office assesses the value of taxable properties within the county. The office can assist the public with a host of matters, such as providing information on change in ownership, exemptions and leased equipment, to name a few.
The San Mateo County Treasurer/ Tax Collector offices are located on the first floor of the County Office Building. The Treasurer/ Tax collector is an elected official tasked with managing and protecting the financial assets of the county. It directs public funds from the County Pool, providing all Pool participants with security and liquidity. This is also the Tax Collector's office.
The clerk of the board provides the county's budget, information about special events and details about how tax dollars are spent and invested in the community to ensure complete transparency.
A five-member board of supervisors runs the county and is elected in a countywide vote. Supervisors are elected to staggered four-year terms with a maximum of three terms in office. They appoint the county manager, who carries out the board's policies and goals and oversees the running of county government.
In addition to the supervisors, voters elect six other San Mateo County officials. They are the assessor/county clerk/recorder, district attorney/public administrator, controller, coroner, sheriff and treasurer/tax collector.
SamCERA, the San Mateo County Employees' Retirement Association, provides retirement, disability and death benefits to employees of the county. It was founded in 1944, and is administered by nine members of the board. The company works out of a large business complex on Marine Parkway.
