Located in Birmingham, Ala., The Worthless Check Unit is a part of Jefferson County District Attorneys Office. The facility helps businesses and victims minimize bad check losses. It is a part of the special services division. The law requires the bad check writer to pay a fee to cover the costs of enforcing Alabamas worthless check laws. The Worthless Check Unit returns restitution to the victim without adding to the financial burden of the criminal justice system. The other departments of the county include merchant checklist, restitution/recovery unit, domestic violence and the drugs court.
