Founded in 1971, The Louisville-Jefferson County Public Defender is a nonprofit organization that offers legal services in Kentucky. Today, eight Neighborhood Places, along with two satellite sites, serve all of the citizens of Jefferson County, Ky. The Northwest Neighborhood Place provides the community with a medical clinic that offers immunizations, head lice checks, tuberculosis skin tests and pregnancy tests. The location also offers assessment and referral in a variety of areas such as employment and training, behavioral and academic problems, alcohol or drug abuse, domestic violence and other mental health concerns. Screening for the Kentucky Temporary Assistance Program, Medicaid and food stamps, child abuse intervention and prevention, counseling and intervention with a particular emphasis in the prevention of more serious problems and student attendance and support round out the core services Northwest Neighborhood Place provides. The organization also offers emergency financial assistance for those who are eligible. In November 1993, the first pilot multi-service center Neighborhood Place opened to increase access to services.
