Miami City Ballet is among the largest ballet companies in the United States, with approximately 50 dancers and a budget of more than $10 million. The company is known for its Repertory Series and performances of George Balanchines The Nutcracker . Founding artistic director Edward Villella was one of the first American-born male stars of the New York City Ballet, establishing the males role in classical dance in the United States. Villellas vision and style for the company is based on the techniques established by choreographer George Balanchine. Established in January 1993, the Miami City Ballet School was established in the manner and style of Villella. The curriculum is based on the evolution of classical dance. The teachers and staff are dedicated to providing preparation for the demands of a professional career that includes technique, role characterization, presentation and the various elements of staging.
