Working for a grocery wholesaler, Bill Moran identified an opportunity for small grocers to compete against emerging mega stores. He opened a single Save-A-Lot store in 1977, which has grown into one of the leading U.S. grocery chains, operating more than 1,150 stores in urban, rural and suburban areas.
