Dr. Gregory Jackson is a specialist in Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology. Dr. Minoo Kavarana was born in Scotland and grew up in Bombay, India. He graduated from medical school in India in 1994. Following this he received post-graduate training in general surgery at New York Medical College. During this period he spent a year at Columbia University, New York as a heart transplant and ventricular assist device post-doctorate fellow. The time spent at Columbia helped him develop a strong interest in heart transplant and the surgical management of heart failure. Following this he received cardiothoracic surgery training at the Jewish Hospital, University of Louisville, Kentucky where they implanted the first implantable total artificial heart. During this time he continued to conduct research on novel concepts for pediatric cardiac assist, which included direct external cardiac compression devices, and developed a deep clinical and research interest in pediatric cardiac disease, pediatric cardiac assist and thoracic organ transplantation. Following this he completed a congenital heart surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with Dr. Edward L. Bove., In 2010, Dr. Kavarana joined the division of cardiothoracic surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston as a pediatric and congenital heart surgeon alongside Dr. Scott Bradley. Working closely with the division of pediatric cardiology, they have produced outcomes equal to or better than the best centers in the world., Dr. Kavarana’s clinical interests include neonatal and infant heart surgery, adult congenital heart surgery, heart and lung transplant and mechanical circulatory support. , Dr. Kavarana is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, the American Heart Association and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is the author of multiple peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters. His research interests include the development of models of congenital heart disease and the field of pediatric mechanical support.<.p>

Dr. Heather Henderson is a board certified pediatric cardiologist with expertise in pediatric cardiomyopathy, heart failure, and heart transplantation. She graduated from the College of Charleston and then received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. She completed her pediatric internship and residency at the University of Alabama Birmingham, followed by pediatric cardiology fellowship at Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Dr. Henderson did an additional year of advanced training in pediatric heart failure and transplantation at Emory University. Her clinical interests include pediatric cardiomyopathies, especially those related to chemotherapy and neuromuscular disorders. She specializes in heart failure management from cardiomyopathy and congenital heart disease, including the use of mechanical circulatory support and ventricular assist devices when necessary, as well as the care of heart transplant recipients.

Dr. Valerian Fernandes received his MBBS degree from St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore in 1989 and his post graduate M.D. (internal medicine) degree from Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh, India in 1992. He received his MRCP degree in 1994 (Member of Royal College of Physicians-UK)., In the U.S., he did his internship at St. Luke-Roosevelt Hospital in New York and completed his internal medicine residency at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota in 1997. His cardiology and interventional cardiology fellowship training was done at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas from 1997 to 2001. Since his training, he has been on the MUSC faculty as an assistant professor of medicine and as a staff physician and director of the cardiac catheterization laboratories at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center., Dr. Fernandes is board certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology. He is level III echocardiography trained and certified and also level II nuclear cardiology trained and certified., Dr. Fernandes’ clinical and research interests include complex coronary interventions, rotational atherectomy, vulnerable plaque evaluation and treatment, acute coronary syndromes, alcohol septal ablation for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, peripheral arterial intervention and Doppler and transesophageal echocardiography. He is the only certified percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty practitioner in the state of South Carolina., Dr. Fernandes has been a principal investigator in several trials and has also co-authored many publications. He is very active in teaching and medical education and has received many teaching awards and nominations. He is a reviewer for medical journals and a fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Scott Bradley is a native of Palo Alto, California. He graduated from Harvard University in 1980, and from Harvard Medical School in 1985. He received postgraduate training in general surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, and spent two years as a research fellow in fetal and cardiovascular surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. He received cardiothoracic surgical training at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric cardiac surgery with Dr. Edward Bove at the University of Michigan., In 1995 Dr. Bradley joined the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery as a pediatric and congenital heart surgeon. Since that time, he has worked closely with the Division of Pediatric Cardiology to produce congenital heart surgery outcomes equal to or better than those of the best centers in the world. MUSC belongs to the Children’s Heart Center of South Carolina, a statewide network of pediatric cardiologists providing coordinated care for all congenital heart patients in South Carolina. MUSC is the only congenital heart center in the state of South Carolina, and now performs 350 to 400 pediatric cardiac surgical cases per year., Dr. Bradley’s clinical interests include staged surgical palliation for single ventricle heart defects, including the Norwood procedure for hypoplastic left heart syndrome, neonatal and infant heart surgery, surgery of the aortic arch, tetralogy of Fallot, the Ross procedure, aortic valve and mitral valve repair, and congenital heart surgery in adults., Dr. Bradley is a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the Congenital Heart Surgeons Society, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and the American Surgical Association. He is the associate editor for Congenital Heart Surgery of Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and is on the editorial boards of The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and Pediatric Cardiology. He serves on the congenital subsection of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles. , Dr. Bradley has been elected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America. Dr. Sheldon E. Litwin is a cardiologist with nationally recognized expertise in advanced cardiac imaging and its use in the diagnosis of heart disease and treatment of patients with heart disease. Johana Rocio Fajardo DNP, RN ANP-BC CHFN FHFSA obtained a BS in Nursing at Florida Atlantic University in 2004 and joined the open-heart surgery team at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she participated in the care of Left Ventricular Assist Device and Heart Transplant patients. During her six years working on the cardiac surgery team, Dr. Fajardo obtained a Master’s of Science in Nursing as an Adult/Gerontology Nurse Practitioner and a Certificate in Nursing Education at the University of Maryland. As a Nurse Practitioner she helped start an outpatient Heart Failure Clinic and was awarded the Johns Hopkins Heart of Gold award and in 2014 and the Heart Failure Society of America Clinical Excellence in Nursing award in 2017., Dr. Fajardo also created a support group for patients with Cardiac Amyloidosis, becoming part of the national Amyloidosis Support Group Association. Her work in cardiac amyloidosis was also recognized by winning first place in a poster competition at the International Society of Amyloidosis Symposium in Kumamoto, Japan in 2018. After obtaining her Doctorate in Nursing practice, she moved to Charleston, SC to join the Ventricular Assist Device and Heart Failure teams and to collaborate in the establishment of an Amyloidosis center at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Fajardo is a Certified Heart Failure Nurse, a fellow of the Heart Failure Society of America, and currently serves on the Education Committee for the American Association of Heart Failure Nurses.

Dr. Kenneth H. Hanger is a general cardiologist who has been in practice for 30+ years. He was an instructor at MUSC for his first two years after completing his internship, residency and fellowship in cardiology at MUSC. Dr. Hangers next step was to start Pee Dee Cardiology in Florence, SC where he was an interventional cardiologist doing heart catheterizations and pacemakers., In 1992, Dr. Hanger returned to Charleston to start Lowcountry Cardiology and remained there until early 2018. While there, he practiced general cardiology, as well as interventional and also TAVR, the aortic valve replacement without surgery., Dr. Hanger returned to MUSC in 2018 to take care of patients that hed had for many years and to take on new ones, as well.
