Ossur is involved in the orthopedics industry. It develops and manufactures products for the treatment of sprains, strains, fractures and post-operative care. The company also manufactures short leg walkers, wrist splints, thumb splints and a variety of other orthopedic braces and supports. Ossur also makes a line of pressure relief shoes and walkers for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. Ossur was issued its first patent in 1988 for the incorporation of gel (for hot and cold therapy) in orthopedic bracing products, as well as for the methods involved in the manufacturing of the braces. Ossur has more than 45 patents for its innovations and 20-plus patents pending. Ossur was founded in 1968 (under the name Royce Medical Company) as a post-operative and cast shoe supplier. In 1981, Ossur expanded its product line and adopted telemarketing as a core sales and marketing strategy. The company is based in Camarillo, Calif.
