About Dr. Richardson Andrew “Keola” Barrister Moliakalaniikeola Richardson, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in adult hip and knee replacements at his practice, with locations in Honolulu, Waipahu, and Kahului, Hawaii. Dr. Richardson is a third-generation Native Hawaiian. He did his undergraduate degree in biology and legal studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and studied for his medical degree at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dr. Richardson completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, one of the nation’s foremost programs with consistently high rankings. While at Duke, Dr. Richardson received the prestigious John M. Harrelson Chief Resident Teaching Award. After completing his residency training in 2015, Dr. Richardson began his subspecialist training in adult hip and knee reconstruction at the world-renowned Joint Implant Surgeons clinic in New Albany, Ohio. While there, he trained in state-of-the-art hip and knee replacement techniques and worked with internationally recognized experts Dr. Adolph V. Lombardi Jr. and Dr. Keith R. Berend. Dr. Richardson is honored to continue his family’s orthopedic legacy in Hawaii. His grandfather, Dr. Barrister (Buster) Allen Richardson, was the first Native Hawaiian board-certified orthopedic surgeon, and his father, Allen B. Richardson, was an internationally recognized expert in orthopedic sports medicine. Dr. Richardson’s special interests include muscle-sparing anterior approach total hip replacement, minimally invasive partial and total knee replacement, complex revision hip and knee reconstruction, rapid rehabilitation protocols, and outpatient or same-day surgery hip and knee replacement. Dr. Richardson is an active member of several professional organizations including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, Piedmont Orthopedic Society, Hawaii Orthopaedic Association, and ‘Ahahui ‘o na Kauka (Association of Native Hawaiian Physicians). In his spare time, Dr. Richardson is passionate about sports. He was co-captain of the men’s water polo team while at UC Berkeley, and he continues to enjoy surfing, swimming, hiking, and spending time at the beach with his family.
