Dr. Kristal Matlock, M.D. is a pediatric endocrinologist with a passion for helping children and their families. She is an assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics and specializes in pediatric endocrinology and diabetes. Dr. Matlock completed her bachelor’s degree at Washington University in St. Louis followed by medical school at University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. She then moved to Ohio for residency and fellowship training at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. She completed additional training in quality improvement during her residency., , Over the course of her medical career, Dr. Matlock has enjoyed caring for children with general endocrine disorders and also developed her clinical interests in diabetes (including type 1, type 2, neonatal and monogenic/MODY), obesity, metabolic syndrome, polycystic ovarian syndrome, Cushing syndrome, and congenital hypothyroidism. She has volunteered at diabetes camps and is involved in the American Diabetes Association as an advocate. Her research interests focus on quality improvement in patient care and healthcare outcomes and psychosocial determinants of health. Dr. Sara Van Nortwick is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon with expertise in the treatment of disorders of the spine and extremities. Dr. Laura Hollinger joined the faculty at MUSC in 2017. She received her undergraduate degree from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, and then her doctorate in medicine degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston at the McGovern Medical School. She completed her internship and residency in general surgery at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas. She also completed a two-year research fellowship at the Methodist Hospital Department of Surgery and Research Institute where she studied critical illness and the distant organ effects of kidney ischemia-reperfusion injury., , Dr Hollinger completed her fellowship training in pediatric surgery in 2017 at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas. Dr. Bondo is a native of small town South Carolina. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biology at the College of Charleston as well as a graduate degree in Public Health and Epidemiology at the University of South Carolina. She attended medical school at MUSC before training in Pediatrics at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Prior to returning to Charleston to work with MUSC, Dr. Bondo worked as a private practice pediatrician in Savannah, Georgia. Since returning to the Lowcountry in 2012, Dr. Bondo has found her passion and interest in evidence-based acute care. She has been the Medical Director for After Hours Care since 2013.

Dr. Nicole Cain graduated from Marshall University in 2001 and completed medical school at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University in 2005. She went on to complete both her pediatric residency and pediatric cardiology fellowship training at the Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. She pursued additional training in pediatric electrophysiology at the Medical University of South Carolina and joined the MUSC faculty as a pediatric electrophysiologist in 2011. Dr. Cain’s academic interests include cardiac arrhythmias such as supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome (WPW). As the director of pediatric electrophysiology, Dr. Cain performs electrophysiology studies and ablation procedures in patients from all over SC and implants pacemakers and defibrillators in teenage and adult patients. , Dr. Cain’s research interests include arrhythmias in the single ventricle population and in patients with congenital heart disease. She is an active research participant in multi-center research studies involving arrhythmias and EKG screening in the Pediatric Heart Network (PHN) and in the Pediatric and Adult Congenital EP Society (PACES).

Dr. Anthony Hlavacek is a doctor who takes care of children with heart problems. Some of these patients are born with abnormally developed hearts, while others develop heart problems later in childhood. He sees patients in our outpatient clinics, and is also the medical director of our pediatric cardiology acute care unit in the Childrens Hospital. In addition, he performs pediatric echocardiography, cardiac CT, cardiac MRI, and fetal echocardiography., He is originally from Missouri, but went to college at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. He then went to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas for medical school. He completed a residency in pediatrics at Texas Children’s Hospital before coming to the Medical University of South Carolina for a fellowship in pediatric cardiology. He has advanced training in cardiac imaging and also completed a Masters in Clinical Research. He is well-respected expert in cardiac imaging and cardiac anatomy, and had been invited to speak at regional, national, and international conferences about these topics. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed scientific articles, 10 book chapters, and co-authored a textbook.

Dr. Christian Streck graduated from Duke University in 1994 with a BS in biology and an AB in history. He received his medical degree from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 1999. He completed general surgery residency in Memphis, Tennessee in 2006. This included a research fellowship studying childrens cancer at St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. He completed pediatric surgery fellowship at LeBonhuer Childrens Hospital in Memphis in 2008. He is currently board certified in general and pediatric surgery. Dr. Streck is an associate professor of surgery and pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is currently the pediatric trauma medical director and the general surgery residency program director., Dr. Strecks research interests include pediatric trauma and minimally invasive surgery. His clinical interests include minimally invasive surgery for a variety of conditions of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. His specific interests include cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, pectus excavatum, trauma, appendicitis, and ovarian masses.
