Montessori Discovery Garden is located in the Westwood area of Los Angeles, serving students ages 2 1/2 through 6 years old. Our school has AMI (Association Montessori International) trained teachers and a support staff of highly qualified specialists. Montessori is a unique and widely lauded educational method, created more than a century ago by an Italian physician and education visionary, Maria Montessori. The philosophy is built around the concepts of self-directed learning, mixed age level classrooms, collaboration, creativity and social responsibility. Montessori schools are found all over the world. In addition to the Montessori classroom activities our children also have enrichment classes available to them which include, music, art, yoga, Spanish, organic gardening and cooking. We are open year round, five days a week from 8am until 6pm. Children are served snacks twice a day, and organic milk at lunch, but bring their own lunches. We are so thrilled to watch the children grow, play and learn in our loving, nurturing and guiding hands. A free parenting consultation with Bonnie Hasse, M Ed., is available upon your visit. The mission of the Silverlake Independent Jewish Community Center is to provide a family education center and community gathering space based in Jewish values and tradition. The SIJCC celebrates an expression of Judaism that welcomes people of all backgrounds. For the past 59 years the SIJCC has served the Jewish Community of the Silverlake/Hollywood area. Built in 1951 with initial funds raised by local members, the responsibilities of running the center were eventually given over to the Jewish Community Centers of Greater Los Angeles ( JCCGLA ). In 2001, facing fiscal challenges, JCCGLA was no longer able to fund the center and its preschool. Unwilling to lose the heart of their community, the pre-school director, teachers and parents banded together, forming the non-profit Silverlake Independent Jewish Community Center. Their efforts and generous support from the Episcopal Church of Los Angeles ensured that the center could remain open. Funds to purchase the building from the JCCGLA were eventually raised. The efforts of the founding board of directors and its President, Janie Shulman ensured the preservation and growth of the SIJCC.
