Maimonides Medical Center is a nonprofit treatment facility and academic medical center in the Borough of Brooklyn. The Medical Center has more than 700 beds, a staff of internationally renowned physicians and more than 70 primary care and sub-specialty programs. As an academic medical center, Maimonides trains more than 400 residents and medical students each year and contributes to the progress of medicine through its broad base of clinical and laboratory research. Founded in 1911 as the New Utrecht Infirmary, it merged with Beth Moses and Israel Zion hospitals in 1947 to become Maimonides Medical Center. The Medical Center is named after Rabbi Moshe Ben Maimon, the 12th century philosopher who established the concept of medicine as a natural science and authored 10 medical books that set forth the foundation of modern medical training of physicians.
