William H. Nieder founded Marathon Engineering Corporation in the spring of 1973. After working the rubber industry for 3-M, and running a sports surfacing company based in Redwood City, Mr. Nieder saw the need for a high-quality safety padding within the correctional and psychiatric markets. From this idea, he developed Gold Medal Safety Padding , which takes it name after the Gold Medal Mr. Nieder won in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. In addition to winning the Gold in the Shot Put in 1960, Mr. Nieder also won the 1956 Silver Medal in the Shot Put in Sydney. Since its inception in 1973, Gold Medal Safety Padding has been installed in thousands of seclusion and detox cells in prisons and jails, safety rooms, suicide prevention and emergency rooms in hospitals and psychiatric facilities and "time-out" and calm down rooms in schools and autism centers. And, since 1973, Marathon Engineering Corporations specialized installation crews have been there to ensure a proper and quality installation. In January of 2005, Marathon was purchased by its current President & CEO, George Hrunka. Although the management has changed Marathons commitment to its "Gold Standard" of quality workmanship and product excellence have remained intact. GOLD MEDAL SAFETY PADDING Marathon Engineering Corporation, manufacturer of Gold Medal Safety Padding , has an unparalleled history of providing owners with a safe, durable, and easily maintained padded environments. Gold Medal Safety Padding is specially formulated providing protection in a variety of applications such as jails, hospitals, detention facilities, mental health facilities, time out rooms in schools, holding rooms in courts, airports, animal stalls, or any other areas where safety and protection is needed. Marathon has utilized modern technology coupled with three decades of experience to refine Gold Medal Safety Paddings manufacturing and installation processes in order to provide the highest quality product at the most economical cost. The padding is applied in sheets of 1 " nominal thickness, while sloped floors will be manufactured on 7/16" OSB, 1" nominal thickness. Gold Medal Padding is uniform, smooth and the non-slip surface is fungus resistant. And, since the finished padded rooms are completely seamless, it can be easily cleaned with the use of detergents. Most importantly however, Gold Medal Safety Padding provides maximum safety as: (1) its chemical composition makes it virtually indestructible to attempts to rip, tear or gouge it, and (2) fire tests have proved it to be self-extinguishing.
