Soon after the Oklahoma Farm Bureau was organized in 1942, the leaders recognized that one of the most needed services for Oklahomas farmers and ranchers was auto insurance. Initially, Kansas Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company provided insurance service to Oklahoma Farm Bureau members. In 1946, Farm Bureau member families loaned $35, 000 to capitalize Oklahoma Farm Bureau Mutual Casualty Company. Soon thereafter, Farm Bureau Mutual Fire Insurance Company was formed to provide property insurance to members. Again, Farm Bureau member families loaned the needed money to capitalize the company. In 1949, these two companies were merged to form Oklahoma Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company. In 1968, AgSecurity Insurance Company was formed as a wholly owned subsidiary of Oklahoma Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company. In 1981, the companies reached the $50 million level in direct premiums, and the $100 million level in 1993. In 2009, the combined direct written premium for Oklahoma Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company and Ag Security Insurance Company was $317, 377, 195. Total assets of Oklahoma Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company at the end of 2009 were $299, 094, 706 and policyholder surplus was $66, 439, 167. In May of 1999, our state suffered the most devastating tornado in its history. For Oklahoma Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, the catastrophe was more than three times as severe as the previous worst in our history, and yet we were able to end the year without a significant loss to our policyholder surplus. In December 2007, the ice storm generated statewide over 8, 000 claims, more than double the previous largest event. Total dollars incurred approached $10 million and the company responded with its usual excellent service. Over the years, products have been developed to meet the needs of Farm Bureau members. These include crop insurance, commercial lines, mobile home, umbrella, pollution liability, farm implement, motorcycle, boat owner, and others. Our core market is the farmers and ranchers in rural Oklahoma. In 1957, the company affiliated with Western Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company in Denver, Colorado, to provide life insurance products to Oklahoma Farm Bureau members. After a merger, that affiliation today is with Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company of West Des Moines, Iowa, which through our agency force provides traditional life insurance products, along with variable life products *, fixed and variable annuities *, and mutual funds *. Through our brokerage department our agents can provide insurance products for a wide range of insurance needs including, workers compensation, commercial lines (not written directly by the company), and health insurance. The strength of our company is people. First, the core members of Oklahoma Farm Bureau provide a loyal customer base that is spread over all 77 counties. Secondly, our agency force and home and field office personnel are dedicated to provide the best service possible to Farm Bureau members. Currently, we have 596 employees in Oklahoma Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance and OFB Assistance Corp along with 242 agents. The OFB Assistance Corp co-employs secretarial staff with county level Farm Bureau organizations throughout the state. Our agency force has evolved from part-time agents to a highly trained professional group of men and women, many of whom are registered securities representatives. Another strength is the network of other Farm Bureau companies across the country that helps us to reduce expenses, provide quality training, and to provide a nationwide spread of risk. With these advantages we can maintain a management that is local in Oklahoma and very close to the customer. Our 11 claims offices are strategically located throughout the state.
