The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is one of the oldest consumer protection agencies in the United States. It started as a single chemist in the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1862. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a drug evaluation and research center that evaluates new drugs before they are sold and monitors TV, radio and print advertisements for various drugs. The agency also maintains the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, which is responsible for the safety of food supply throughout the U.S. Headquartered in Rockville, Md., The U.S. Food and Drug Administration maintains an office in Chicago.
