Mission and History Mission The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention ( AFSP ) is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide. Providing education and information about depression and suicide to professionals, the media and the public through workshops, trainings, the AFSP website, videos, publications, brochures and public service announcements. AFSPs PSA, "Suicide Shouldnt be a Secret, " has reached 90 million television viewers. Publicizing the magnitude of the problems of depression and suicide, advocating for policies and legislation that can help prevent suicide and working to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide. Offering programs for survivors of suicide loss that can be of assistance and involving survivors in suicide prevention. AFSP survivor initiatives include the National Survivors of Suicide Day program, which was broadcast to over 175 communities and was simulcast on the AFSP website, the Survivor e-Network and trainings for survivor support group facilitators. In 1987, a number of leading experts on suicide came together with business and community leaders and survivors of suicide to form AFSP, a registered 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) nonprofit organization. They believed that only a combined effort would make it possible to fund the research necessary for progress in the prevention of suicide. Such an approach has proven successful with heart disease, cancer and diabetes and it was hoped that it would be successful in dealing with depression and suicide. Many of our original founders were concerned with the alarming rise in youth suicide over the past four decades. During this period, the suicide of young men had tripled ; that of young women had doubled. Suicide is now the second major cause of death among high school and college students. Suicide is even more frequent among older people. The highest rates are found in men over 50. Before the AFSP was formed, there was no national not-for-profit organization dedicated to funding the research, education and treatment programs necessary to prevent suicide. Over the past 20 years, we have changed that.

One doesnt need to be an actor, singer, or broadcaster to be a professional voice user. Teachers, physicians, salespeople, and most everyone depend on their voices to earn a living. Warning signs of a potentially serious disease a raspy voice, a persistent, dull pain in the throat, difficulty swallowing, or a tired voice are ignored too often. According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders of the National Institutes of Health, approximately 7.5 million Americans have trouble using their voices. Despite widespread voice problems, too little is known about the vocal disorders that cut short careers, impair the speech process, devastate and even threaten peoples lives. When The Voice Foundation was founded in 1969 by the internationally celebrated voice specialist Wilbur James Gould, M.D., interdisciplinary care of the human voice was non-existent. Dr. Goulds groundbreaking foresight brought together physicians, scientists, speech-language pathologists, performers, and teachers to share their knowledge and expertise in the care of the professional voice user. Since 1989, The Voice Foundation has been led by Robert Thayer Sataloff, M.D., D.M.A., F.A.C.S., an internationally renowned otolaryngologist who is also a professional singer and conductor, and author of more than 600 publications, including over 36 textbooks. The Mission of the Voice Foundation is to enhance knowledge, care and training of the voice through educational programs and publications for voice care professionals, the public and professional voice users, and through supporting and funding research. Fund distributes 5% of its assets annually. It is governed by a board of managers of up to 18 people. Merchants Fund is a Philadelphia charity established in 1854 to provide charitable gifts to business persons facing financial hardship. It evolved from the Mercantile Beneficial Association, an organization dedicated to providing business advice, networking opportunities, and protection from financial failure or default due to illness, old age, or disability at a time in our nations history when there was no health or disability insurance, or pension plans. Merchants Fund has succeeded for nearly 150 years by keeping the goals and objectives of its early founders in a constantly changing social and economic environment. Patricia Blakely joined Merchants Fund in 2007 and was appointed Executive Director that same year. During her 25-year career in the non-profit sector, Ms. Blakely has led projects for an impressive range of area organizations, including the Charles Ellis Trust, the White-Williams Scholars program, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and others. Notable accomplishments include managing a $1 million program to distribute laptops to high-achieving, low-resource, Philadelphia-area students and developing guidance materials for "Student Success Centers" in eight of the the most under-served and racially isolated high schools in the City of Philadelphia. From 1995 until 2006, Ms. Blakely was lead administrator for a tuition/scholarship program targeting low-income girls from single parent homes, resulting in support for some 2000 students in over 200 schools and academic enrichment programs. She has been a consultant to the Philadelphia School District, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, and served as a program evaluator for the Philadelphia Cultural Fund. The Barnes Foundation is one of the most storied art collections in Philadelphia. Originally founded by wealthy scientist Albert C. Barnes in 1922, the private, world-class collection of Modern and post-Impressionist paintings by the likes of Picasso, Cezanne, Renoir, and Matisse was intended as an educational endeavor. Originally located in a mansion in Merion, PA, it's controversial move to Center City Philadelphia is chronicled in the 2009 documentary film The Art of the Steal.

Parking and Public Transportation at the Barnes Foundation

The main collection is located on Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Center City Philadelphia and accessible through many forms of public transportation. Philadelphia's SEPTA bus lines 7, 32, 33, 38 and 48 all stop at the foundation. The PHLASH trolley, which services popular tourist destinations in the city, also stops at the Barnes.

If you're driving, take I-676 to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway exit. Parking is limited and first-come, first-served.

Admission to the Barnes Foundation

Adults tickets are $25 on weekends, $22 on weekdays (the foundation is closed on Tuesdays). Seniors 65 and older are $23 on weekends, $20 on weekdays. Students with a valid ID and children 6-18 are $10 every day, and children 5 and under are free. Admission includes a downloadable audio tour.

Like its neighbor, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Barnes Foundation also offers free admission on the first Sunday of every month. Tickets are limited so make sure to arrive early.

Must See/Do at the Barnes Foundation
The Foundation's Center City location replicates the interior design/aesthetic of the original mansion in Merion, PA, so while the collection is extensive, artwork is nearly layered on top of each other, creating a dense, compact experience which can be overwhelming but won't exhaust you.

Themed guided tours are available daily, and the foundation will frequently run discounts for these on weekdays. If you're interested in a more immersive experience, check out the foundation's expansive list of art workshops and classes.

Other Places to Visit Near the Barnes Foundation
Philadelphia has a wealth of great museums, from the nearby Philadelphia Museum of Art to the National Museum of American Jewish History to the outright weird in the Mütter Museum. For a little shopping and dining afterwards, head to the Rittenhouse Square area of Center City.

Insider tips for visitors to the Barnes Foundation
Book ahead to make sure you can visit at the time you want, as space is limited. Like many art galleries in Philadelphia, the Barnes Foundation participates in First Fridays, where live music, cocktails, and hors d'oeuvres are available as you peruse the collection in the evening.
