Virginia Mason Medical Center is a private, nonprofit organization that offers health services, including a multi-specialty group practice of more than 390 physicians, a regional network of sports and occupational medicine facilities and an acute care hospital licensed for more than 330 beds. Virginia Mason s Benaroya Research Institute is among 12 centers in the world chosen by the National Institutes of Health to perform islet transplants for diabetes patients. The organization also provides the Bailey-Boushay house, a nursing residence and day health center for people living with AIDS. Established in 1920, the medical center was named after the daughters of doctors James Tate Mason and John M. Blackford, who co-founded the clinic with radiologist Maurice Dwyer, M.D.
