It is one of the very few public elementary schools in the state of California to receive a GreatSchools rating of 9 out of 10.
Principal Brenda Weinstock holds regular coffee and chat sessions with the school's parents, and the school also runs the Mar Vista School Enrichment Group (MVSEG) - a non-profit organization run by parents that raises funds and materials for the school.
The school also offers the Science, Theatre, Arts & Recreation (STAR) after-school program. STAR is a non-profit organization that offers programs and classes that help children explore the world and widen their cultural base.
Opened in 1911, Our Lady of Loretto Grammar School is a Catholic elementary school in Echo Park. Originally, the school was housed in a building close to its current location on Union Avenue. In 1921, a six-classroom building was erected at the school's present location. In 1928 the first expansion was completed.
Over the years, the school has gone through many administrations and transformations. Currently it serves children in kindergarten through eighth grade.
