Newman Library is owned and operated by the University of the State of New York. The library has a collection of clinical books, journals, periodicals, archives, medical artifacts and books on the history of medicine. In addition, it maintains a collection of audiovisuals, as well as books related to nursing, dentistry and basic sciences. The library also maintains a multimedia collection, including CDs, DVDs, cassettes and videotapes. It organizes a variety of events, such as games, story sessions, reading activities, book discussions and computer classes. In 1929, the Blair family donated their house to be used as Clawson's public library. Decades later, the city sought to reconstruct the building to what would house up to 30,000 books. But the library's collection of books, audio CDs, DVDs and other items has since outgrown the building and the city passed a bond proposal in 2009 to expand the facility and do major renovations to both the exterior and interior. In the spring of 2010, construction began at the site and the building closed in late-July of that same year. The library reopened its doors to the public in November 2010 with new carpet, new computers, new tables, bathrooms, an additional 4,000 square feet and more. The library also has a children's and young adult section.

AdministrationThe Library Director Susan Cooley moved to Rome, GA in 1988 immediately after graduating with a degree in Library Science from Emporia ( KS ) State University. She was hired by Rome-Floyd County Library in August of 1988 to enter catalog records destined for the new automated Dynix catalog. Soon after, she was lucky enough to be selected for a full-time position in the Circulation Department. In 1991, she was named Circulation Coordinator, then Associate Director in 1995. She became the Director of the Sara Hightower Regional Library System in 1996. Although she doesnt have any time to enjoy them, her other interests include walking long distances, hiking, sewing, baking, and of course...reading. In 1928, the City of Texas City allocated a room in the newly built City Hall for a public library. The Texas City Civic Club operated the library in this space until 1948. The City hall building was damaged in the 1947 explosion and later demolished. The library was relocated to a former house at 5th Street and 9th Ave N. At this time, the library was renamed the Moore Memorial Public Library in honor of Hugh Benton Moore and Helen Moore. In 1964, the library moved into its present facilities, built especially for the library. In 1986, the building was expanded to its present size of 21, 000 square feet. The Moore Memorial Public Library provides services free of charge to all Texas residents. Visitors from other states and nations are welcome to use library services as well, but may not checkout library materials.
