The Breast Cancer Alliance is a non-profit organization that funds innovative breast cancer research. It promotes breast health through education and outreach. The alliance was founded in March 1996 by Mary Waterman, who, after being diagnosed with terminal stage-four breast cancer, wanted to help other women in the fight against the disease. Ms. Waterman passed away in January 1997.
This regional organization has since awarded over $13.8 million in grants to breast cancer research and early detection initiatives, and has helped sponsor outreach programs in Connecticut and New York. The Breast Cancer Alliance is currently the fourth-largest non-profit, private funding provider to breast cancer research in the country. The alliance receives financial support from local groups, businesses and benefactors; the group's primary fundraiser is an annual luncheon and fashion show.
