Established in 1911, Bluefield Gas Company was the first gas provider to manufacture gas from coal in Bluefield. Appalachian Natural Gas Distribution Company currently owns the company. The gas the company produces is used for home appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, dryers, pool heaters, etc. and the natural gas is used for heating systems, cooling/refrigeration, water heaters, vehicles and food service by the commercial and industrial customers. In addition, Bluefield Gas Company offers various natural gas services, which include energy efficient home programs, property site visits, natural gas main extensions, home builder and developer services. Consolidated Electric and Gas of New York, a company that specializes in buying gas properties, purchased the stock of the company during the Great Depression era.
