The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University was founded in 1812 and is one of the oldest science museums in the United States. The Academy began as an institution of higher learning and has grown into an international tourist attraction in the 21st Century. The Academy is also known for its blending of education and teaching into its programs; such as the first program, the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition. Preserved artifacts from that mission remain in the vaults today. The museum is perfect for travelers of any age who are interested in the outdoors, fish and wildlife and rare exhibits.

The best time to visit the Academy is in the summer when they offer a variety of interactive programming and visitors can walk the grounds. Visiting the Academy of Natural Sciences in January or February can be difficult due to the snowfall in the region.

There are three things visitors must do at the museum. Children must attend the two-day Bugfest summer camp accompanied by the Grossology exhibit which runs all summer and is just as fun for adults. There is a live animal petting zoo along with a life-size skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaur. There are is also the opportunity to attend a sleep over at the museum as part of the 'Museum after Dark' series which has two options – one for kids and one for adults.

The museum is open 7 days a week and offers discounted admission for children under 12 and group discounts. Prices vary for the special exhibits and programs for adults and children. The Academy can also be rented out for special events like weddings.
